Abstract

The article explores the didactic potential of the TED Talks platform as an effective tool for fostering complex thinking skills and developing productive language activities in the process of English language teaching. The relevance of the study is driven by contemporary educational requirements, which demand that learners not only possess communicative English proficiency but also the ability to critically evaluate information, analyze arguments, form independent positions, and present ideas creatively. The paper substantiates the interconnection between cognitive skills (critical and creative thinking) and communicative competences, specifically the ability to produce utterances and exchange messages both orally and in writing. Special attention is paid to the characterization of TED Talks as an authentic educational resource that bridges scientific, social, and cultural issues with a logical speech structure, duration of 10–20 minutes, and a diverse range of linguistic models and accents. The availability of subtitles and transcripts expands the possibilities for differentiated instruction, facilitating the development of listening comprehension, vocabulary acquisition, and the refinement of reading skills. The study analyzes methods for integrating TED Talks into the educational process, including active listening and notetaking, the organization of discussions, debates, and role-plays, as well as written assignments (summaries, reviews, and essays). It is demonstrated that the systematic use of the platform enhances learners’ intrinsic motivation, fosters intercultural competence, and develops higher-order thinking skills (according to Bloom’s Taxonomy) essential for effective professional and academic performance in a globalized world.
