Abstract
The article investigates the role of the English language as a strategic resource for the internationalization of Ukrainian universities. It analyzes the current state of English language teaching in higher education institutions in Ukraine, identifies the main functions of the language in shaping students’ academic mobility and intercultural communication, and outlines directions for improving language training. The study demonstrates that English performs communicative, cognitive‑educational, socio‑cultural, academic‑adaptation, professional‑oriented, metacommunicative, motivational, and informational functions, which together ensure the effective integration of students into the global educational space. Analysis of current trends in English language teaching in Ukrainian universities shows that progress is achieved through the implementation of English‑medium instruction (EMI), English for Specific Purposes (ESP) courses, digital platforms, and international exchange programs. At the same time, challenges remain, including uneven distribution of resources among universities, insufficient teacher training, and the need for continuous curriculum updates to meet international standards. The article proposes specific directions for enhancing language training, such as expanding EMI and ESP programs, improving teacher qualifications, fostering intercultural competence, applying innovative teaching methods, utilizing digital educational resources, and providing targeted support for mobile students participating in international programs. The findings confirm that English functions as a key instrument for the internationalization of higher education in Ukraine, facilitating students’ academic mobility, enhancing their professional skills, promoting intercultural understanding, and increasing the competitiveness of Ukrainian universities within the global educational environment. The research emphasizes the strategic importance of systematic language preparation as an integral component of national higher education policy aimed at international integration and sustainable academic development.
