Abstract

The article describes the issue of using tests in English classes of professional orientation for students of higher medical education institutions of Ukraine. The main parameters of the quality of test tasks, such as validity and reliability, are analyzed, and their brief characteristics are given. It is determined that tests are diverse in purpose (educational, examination, diagnostic, personal), in format (open, closed, multiple choice) and are intended to assess the knowledge, skills or abilities of a student of a certain academic discipline. Open-form test tasks are formulated in the form of a statement, next to which ready-made answers with a choice are not given. The student must independently write his answer in the space provided for this. They can be supplementary (to check knowledge of names, names, facts, properties, signs, etc.), with a short answer or with a detailed answer. Tests with a choice of one correct answer are the simplest type of testing, in which the correct answer is already contained, and the student’s task is to find it. The student’s task is to choose the correct answer using the knowledge gained during the course. Their content should be such that in order to choose the correct answer, it is enough to recall and apply only what was heard in class and read in the literature recommended for study. The same principles can be applied to tasks with a choice of several correct answers as to tasks with a choice of one correct answer. One or more answers can be correct. The student must independently determine the number of correct answers. Tasks where the elements of one set must be matched to the elements of another set are called matching tasks. Matching tests are effective for self-control and current control of knowledge. They are used to test the so-called associative knowledge, that is, knowledge about the relationship between form and content, essence and phenomenon, about the relationship between various objects, properties, and laws. The student must compose an answer from the elements of the list in the left column and the corresponding elements in the right column. If it is necessary to establish the correct sequence of actions or words (answer options), tests for establishing the correct sequence are used. This is a more complex type of test tasks, during the performance of which the student forms an answer from the proposed unregulated sequence of words.
