Abstract

Ukrainian spelling as a set of generally recognized and generally binding rules establishes the methods of transmitting language in writing. It has developed historically, reflecting ancient traditions or new trends in the transmission of sounds, words and forms that are manifested in the written language at different stages of its development.
The article analyzes the history of the creation of Ukrainian spelling, the most important changes that have occurred from the Ukrainian-Slavic period to the present day. The contribution of prominent Ukrainian linguists, teachers and researchers who have worked for a long time to improve Ukrainian spelling and punctuation is characterized.
Four periods are distinguished in the more than thousand-year history of spelling. The first period (XI-XVI centuries) is associated with the orographic tradition of the famous educators and preachers of Christianity Cyril and Methodius, adapted to the peculiarities of the Old Ukrainian language. The second period (16th–17th centuries) reflects the influence of South Slavic orthography on Old Ukrainian (mostly church) writing. The third period (17th–early 19th centuries) was initiated by the Grammar of the Ukrainian linguist, writer, church figure, and educator Meletii Smotrytsky, published in 1619. The fourth period begins with the first quarter of the 19th century, when a new Ukrainian literary language was being formed on a folk basis. It was at that time that the formation of modern Ukrainian orthography began and developed. From the time of the writing of I. Kotlyarevsky's Aeneid in 1798 to 1905, up to 50 different spelling systems were proposed. The article also outlines the basic rules that are presented in the new edition of the orthography of the modern Ukrainian literary language. Among them, it is worth highlighting such as the use of i, y at the beginning of a word, the letter g, the apostrophe, the soft sign, the letter combinations yo, yo, writing complex words together and with a hyphen, as well as words of foreign origin, writing undoubled and doubled letters to denote consonants, etc. In addition, a system of exercises and tasks is proposed that will help you quickly and effectively master the main changes that Ukrainian spelling has.
Modern Ukrainian orthography is determined by the 2019 edition, which has a significant number of language norms inherent in Ukrainian traditions. Language renewal is a living and continuous process. It is constantly developing, reflecting changes in the language and its interaction with world languages.
