Abstract

The article studies the interpretation of implicatures in the pragmatic translation of political discourse. The notion of political discourse and political language has been actualized, because the pragmatics of political language is the study of three types of implicative relations in political discourse: secondary meaning, implicature and assumption. Particular attention is paid to political discourse as a sphere of communication where various strategies and tactics of influence, persuasion, manipulation are manifested. This fact encourages the study of language and speech means of implementing these strategies and developing ways to translate them. Based on the theory of Grice’s language implicatures, words, phrases and sentences in Obama’s speeches were analyzed in order to identify ambiguous hints, the interpretation of which depends on the level of cultural and social awareness of the addressee. It is determined that translators must decide how relevant the implicit translation is for the recipients of the translation. This issue is empirically explored in this article from a cognitive point of view. It is analyzed that in-text explication in the translated texts can be used to interpret some of the implicatures used by Obama in his political speeches to achieve relevance in translation for speakers of other languages. The analysis of political speeches shows that the in-text explanation of implicatures, if it fills social, cultural, historical gaps in the foreign language environment, significantly increases the relevance of translation for the target audience in the context of political speech translation. The results of the study show that in-text explication of implicatures to some extent reduces the cognitive efforts of the recipients of translation, and thus increases the relevance of political translation. In general, this paper highlights the crucial role of cognition in the pragmatic translation of political discourse, and proves that translation is a triad of cognitive interactions between the communicator, the translator, and the recipient.
